Almost 160 years after the first California gold rush of 1849, a new wave of prospectors rushed to the state seeking fortune. In 2009, Sarina Finkelstein left Brooklyn to join them, but instead of looking for treasure, she went looking for photographs. Her book, The New Forty-Niners, is the result of her four-year journey into an amazing subculture made up of gamblers, adventurers, veterans, retirees, freelancers, ex-convicts, and off-the-grid types.

Even after the gold fever died down, gold itself was in the air in San Francisco—as long as you knew where to look. That place would be in the San Francisco Mint. In a majestic granite and sandstone building downtown, bullion was turned into gold coins—as well as lots and lots of gold dust.
A fascinating 1893 newspaper tour of the San Francisco Mint—spotted by historian Yoni Appelbaum spotted on Twitter—takes us into the workrooms where men cut gold into strips and the adjusting rooms where ladies filed coins down to just the right size. Millions in precious metal passed through these rooms every year, and none of it went to waste, recovered, instead, through "seemingly small economies." The six-hour miniseries, which stars Game of ThronesRichard Madden, tells the story of the last great Gold Rush in history. Madden will join Klondike co-stars and executive producers for a special episode of Discovery's Gold Rush preshow The Dirt on Monday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. 

That special will lead into a new episode of Gold Rush before the first two-hour part of Klondike debuts at 9 p.m.
